I think you can't compare American vs Japanese animation really. The age themes are aimed at different audiences. For me, it's hard to ever top Akira, which I think is one of the greatest animation-style movies of all time. But, the Lion King has it's own appeal as well.

I think both styles have their use, so I enjoy both really.

 

Akira wins animation. With 2 Flawless Victories and a Fatalaty.

 

I watched it again (for the 100th time) a few weeks ago so that my wife could appreciate it's wonderment... she didn't get it.  Oh well, for myself, it shall always reign as king on my animation DVD shelf-section.  I remember watching that movie in my youth, the first time I ever smoked--ah never mind, you get the idea.
