Both have elements of true.

Obama has been pretty wise to move away from that throughout the campaign and most recently with having Pastor Rick Warren appear at his inauguration.

If Republicans lost some of their control over the religion issue, it could seriously injure the party's future.  Obama is wise trying to take the issue away from them.

 

I think Obama would be wise to ride center-left through these 4-years, and he'll greatly improve his chances at re-election in 2012.  The half of the country on the right is affraid that Obama will brow beat them with liberalism over the next 4-years.  If he bucks that train of thought and ventures closer to the center, he could wait until his second term to start really pressing his inner-agenda.  That would be smart politics (at least that is what I would advise if I were part of his inner-circle).
