I really don't understand this "hardcore" labeling of games :/ I've been gaming since the Spectrum days, and for a long time hardcore was given to those people who would play games nonstop, all kind of games.
It seems nowadays the significance is only given to a specific type of games that are quite recent, completely shutting off genres that have been around since the beginning of the industry

The definition of hardcore changed with people could bitch and moan on the internet. While I play significantly less games than I used to, I would probably still be called a "hardcore" gamer by most of the people that know me. However, I don't fit into the "modern" definition becuase I actually play a wide variety of games, including many that are consider causal.

In recent years though, with internet forums to come and complain on, those who feel they aren't being personally pandered to by the companies, come and complain and badmouth anyone who plays any games they don't consider "hardcore". Since most of them are in their teens (not that I'm all that much older) their taste in gaming is what they consider "mature" even though most adults wouldn't consider the games mature at all (not that slaughtering an entire army of people isn't fun).

Although I was born shortly after the spectrum was released, I was gaming since a very early age (my mum, who was gaming before the sepectrum and still does to this day, introduced me to gaming), I agree with your definition. It has only been recently with a vocal minority, that the definition has changed.

Sidenote: My Mum, who plays 30-40 hours of games a week, would not be called hardcore because she has never played a "hardcore" game in her life.
