Yeah... Without the previous games, you can't possibly understand what Kojima tried to accomplish with Metal Gear Solid 4. You can still enjoy the epic gunfights and boss battles though!
If you can, get the Essential Collection for PS2! YOU NEED to play the previous games to fully understand the story in MGS4! There are a few flashbacks, but yeah...
