Traditionally games were played with a joystick and one big button, maybe 2 if you were lucky. These newfangled controllers with 10-20 buttons are just there for casuals, who might as well be playing a piano.
Pac-Man and Donkey Kong each had a joystick and one button. Duck Hunt had no joysticks and one button. Wii Sports Tennis and Boxing have no joysticks and no buttons. I think these are the most traditional controls there are.
