I think "badass" fits Gears perfectly. If I remember right, the whole Helghast style (the city and Helghast themselves) were inspired by totalitarian countries such as nazi Germany. The whole gas mask thing also sorta reminds me of the cyber goth style, though that's probably stretching it.
I personally love Killzone's style. I haven't even played the first one but the art just really catches my attention. I'm reaaaally excited about KZ2. It was one of the two main reasons I bought a PS3. Probably pretty risky to rely so much on one game, but it was looking much too insane to pass by - I'll take the chance.
