I guess it is just my area, but whenever one of my friends get a HDTV it is usually LCD or Plasma.

Yeh TVs are mostly LCD/Plasma but the number of CRT monitors (High Def TV) out there is huge. Many people don't seem to realise that they've had a 15"-19" "HDTV" sitting above their PC for the last 10-15 years. Probably capable of more than 720p too.
Gotta love marketing.

Most people don't care about HD @ that small of a screen size. It is not nearly as important. Once you get above 20", CRT's are expensive, heavy and take up 5x the room of a plasma or LCD.
In my area, other than projection CRT's (which suck compared to just about every other TV type) you can't even buy a CRT larger than about 19".
For better or worse CRT is a dying breed.

It may be how close we are to the computer monitor, but the higher resolutions of CRT monitors makes a huge difference.
