@ kasz: Plenty of levels around without any kind of "trigger" and they are a joy to play. Point invalid :)
Besides, they've just created something new and offered it to the players.
It's not as if they withheld certain parts of the game and then offered it as download (unlike what some other games are doing somewhat).
It's like having a lousy story and then bringing out additional story parts in an RPG just for it to make sense. this isn't the case with this expansion.
new levels, new prizes, new trophies and an additional tool to create new levels with. It's like an expansion pack.
Consider an expansion pack for any C&C game. They come out quite a while after the game, they add new units, and they then withhold players who do not buy it from being able to enjoy them.
LBP expansion = new game mechanics given, everyone can play them even though they haven't bought them, they just can't "use" them in their own level creation, in faster bursts and of a high level.
Yet you complain?
