This is their entire fault for believing what gamers are saying on the Internet.
This is a typical example of being in caught in "believing what people said".
I think it was in one of "Iwata asks" session that Nintendo said they learned long ago to not "listening to what people say", but rather to "look at what they're doing".
Often, the customer doesn't know himself what he wants.
That's pretty obvious of gamers on Internet. That or their wish is nearly always far from what most people wish.
