I have trouble with "army" games because I have trouble pantomiming actual wars. I've had family in nearly every war in which the United States has paticipated and turning that into a game seems kind of off, unless it goes full-tilt to get rid of all the glamour and portrays it in a realistic, potentially horrific way. |
I understand your point. However I know more people that came back from Iraq turned onto war games than those that were turned off. Purely anecdotal of course, but you get the point.
Some of the war games are a bit horrific. None of them can truly portray the brutality of war, because it would probably push well past the M rating all the way to a full blown AO. I'm pretty sure this is why Vietnam has been basically ignored by any major developer that would try to bring accuracy to the ugliness of that conflict. I personally think Call of Duty does an ok job at your suggestions, but they do seem biased since you always play one side of the conflict instead of both. It always gives you a sense of heroism from the player's side, no matter which side you're actually playing. I'm sure if they allowed you to play as the Germans, it would give you that same sense of heroism and positive outlook towards the cause playing that side.
