I think the people who don't see the difference have setup their HD signal wrong, or haven't calibrated/setup their TV correctly.
My dad did the same thing, he got HD via Dish Network and used standard A/V cables to his 73" 1080p, so he thought "HD" was a joke... and then when I finally set it up for him via HDMI (along with a BD player), my younger brother jacked with the TV settings to output in 480p after I left.
So... to this day my dad thinks HD is a joke. I think a lot of uninformed people are like this really.
