4. Gears of War 2
Xbox 360
Microsoft, Epic Games

Epic Games’ Gears of War 2 is not only a technological showpiece, but also an entertainment experience even more visceral than its 2006 predecessor. The game accomplishes what it set out to do: expand upon the scope of the original and turn the wrench on the already tight pop-and-shoot gameplay. Sharply executed online modes also help make this one of the best action entertainment experiences of any media this year.

3. Fable II
Xbox 360
Microsoft, Lionhead Studios

Lionhead fully realized the vision of the first Fable with a sequel that brings forth true consequences for players’ choices. The fact that such choices have an impact in a beautifully materialized Albion supports any praise for Fable II.

2. Grand Theft Auto IV
PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Take-Two, Rockstar North

Grand Theft Auto IV contains a vast landscape that holds so much opportunity and depth for players to experience in both gameplay and story, but it still manages to abstain from becoming a victim of its own scope. It did more than sidestep pitfalls, though, improving upon its exhilarating predecessor San Andreas in virtually every regard.

1. LittleBigPlanet
PS3
SCE, Media Molecule

“Charming” is a word oft used to describe Media Molecule’s debut game, but that attribute is just part of a well-polished sheen atop a trove of innovations that beckons players to express their own creativity. It brings together all types of gamers, even drawing in non-gamers to witness user-generated spectacle. LittleBigPlanet’s target audience is “people,” and it deserves recognition as game of the year.
