It's not, there's a bigger difference between the original and Pacific Rift than most other racers which received sequels.

The game is well enhanced in almost every aspect, in addition there's a lot more varierity in environments. Really you need to play this game, if you liked the original Motorstorm, you will probably love this one!

Maybe that's why Burnout Paradise is the obvious choice then, because IGN thinks that way too. The game with the most changes to the formula wins. Obviously that's Burnout.
