Ok i really dont want to say much about the story its better you play it. I will say this. The story is about Cosmos VS Chaos and their quest to obtain crystals. Its a fan service fighting game foremost so dont expect to much story wise. As for any references to other FF series you will have to play it to find out.
Each character starts off at level 1 and there are 5 chapters to complete per character in story mode. Takes anywhere from 1hour+ to complete the whole 5 chapters on 1 character depending on how good you are. Each chapter has collectable items so you need to play through each characters chapter more then once if you want to get 100% with that character. You cant get 100% on the first play through.
