I think your premise for this thread is COMPLETELY wrong.
The LAST Mario game released - NEW SUPER MARIO BROS - was in my opinion the best of the lot. It has sold through the roof in Japan (4.5mill+), as well as overseas - with total sales approaching 10million. And all this in less than a year.
Mario started on handhelds, and in my opinion will always be more at home (i.e. the "definitive" Mario game) on handhelds. Console versions are just a distraction.
That said - I did find Sunshine disapointing, but for un-obvious reasons. The game was quite a lot of fun, and had some really creative ideas in it. It did lack polish, balancing - and I thought the setting was terrible (sort of lost all the "real" Mario flavour - mushrooms, etc).
I have very high hopes for Galaxy, and so far it looks to me like it will deliver. I think the sales will blow Sunshine out of the water.
Mario did hit rock bottom - but has been reborn on the DS, and he is heading for dizzying heights again :)
I know that, but the point of this was about the console Mario's.
