They are not cutting prices because they are going for profit too. They even said that in 2009 they'd be more aggressive. Even if they now can't, because of downturn or whatever, they are still gunning for that profit, so whatever they do, they will want to recoup whatever they can get, and that is NOT going to happen if they abandon the PS3 now.
They'll get 17 million angry customers, not exactly the image they are hoping for.
Even if they only sell lowly (compared to the other two), they'll keep at it, just to make sure some money is earned back, and possibly to keep a flow of "Hey, we're still here"-products out there in the gaming market.
However, if they have not learned from this experience for their (possible) PS4 (whenever it may arrive), then they'll scratch it after that. They are not going to abandon ship when it's just rough at sea.
