The Last Remnant, IMO is the least like ANY JRPG you've probably played in quite some time.

The storyline is a very typical JRPG, but has good production values with it (think LO or FFXII for most aspects)

The battle system & class system is heavily from SRPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Ogre Battle

The level system & character progression system is certainly Western - Very similar to Morrowind/Oblivion (ie, the more you use certain skills, the better they become, and your character begins to gravitate toward that skillset). No XP is involved in the game whatsoever. You do have a global level called a 'battle rank' that is the aggregate standing of all your characters, but it's very vague. Also, like most of my WRPG characters, the lead guy - Rush - is becoming a jack of all trades - he has skills for virtually every aspect of the game - one & two handed sword arts, magic, items, potions, and limit breaks.

Oh, and the cash system is certainly WRPG-esque, and probably the BEST I've seen from a JRPG. No more 'kill the slime and find 10 gold pieces'. Instead, gold is VERY rare to get, even in treasure chests. To get money, you must either capture the enemies you fight, live, and sell them, or butcher them for synthesis pieces. It's probably the most difficult game I've played when it comes to getting gold, because it's so rare, and trade-in rates on items is like 1/8th of the purchase value...As opposed to the standard 1/2 we see in all JRPGs.

At least give it a rent. TLR, I believe, is a very polarizing game. It has it's flaws, and some may hate the game for it. However, it's far from the status quo of standard JRPGs, and I really like the depth the game offers.
