These are opposite effects actually a)substitution effect, b)Tranmission effect. The net effect will probably be positive for bluray in the INITIAL period, but the marginal cost will get higher more quickly than marginal benefit (meaning substitution will dominate the Transmission) in the latter periods, so it will simply harm the Bluray overall, due to dvd dominance and increasing competition from online services.

Streaming Netflix and Blu-Ray are 2 totally different target audiences so it wouldn't effect sales of Blu-Ray very much if at all.    I am not even sure Sony would use that as an excuse.   It may have a small effect on DVD sales, but I don't think that would be the case.  I have Netflix and yet I go out and buy DVD's often.  I use the streaming service to get things I would never buy or tie up one of my rental ques for.  And I feel that would be what most people would do.

 

 

 Hmmm, what you say makes sense actually, which is what we call, "harnessing the consumer surplus". I mean You watch stuff thru netflix, of which you wouldnt buy the dvd. Netflix in this case, can even increase the dvd sales or bluray sales. This is the "Transmission Effect". However the whole economy doesnt consist of you only. There are people like you as well as people who would simply choose between Netflix and DVD. I, personally, being a very mobile person, have no room to archieve all those dvds, and when I rent a dvd, I watch it, rip it, save it in a highly compressed format, and return it. So netflix is a perfect substitute for me. There are gonna be people like you and me, on the extreme ends, but also others in between. They are not entirely different segments at all, thats why bluray is not getting popular out of the blue (because people dont care much about hi-def). By Netflix, popularity of online services increase and by time, it will dominate/substitute physical formats, which is much sooner and easier than online downloaded games.
