Forgetting the NES much? Though I know what you mean...2D Mario games are the original, and are a great experience, but console versions have as much of a home in my heart as the handhelds do.
Hmmm... good point (it did predate the GB didn't it..).
Or did it actually start on Arcade? (Mario Bros?) I have no idea to be honest.
I think that mario made his first appearance on the NES's Donkey Kong.
