You're right, it's very easy to cross over from humor to sounding like self hate...

Generally though, if you followed my first rule, "listen", then she won't care any way.  If she doesn't laugh move on and ask her another question.  But at that point after talking, she should laugh at just about anything you say that sounds remotely like a joke.  At least in my experience.
