If  "the definitive JRPG console" doesnt = "All" what does? Because that title belonged to the PS2 last gen.

There's no such thng as a platform with "All" the RPGs, not even PS2. The PS3 and 360 getting a couple of high and mid profile RPGs here and there doesn't change that the Wii has slowly been soaking up the majority of the Japanese console RPG support, even before Dragon Quest X. DQX just solidified its position as the dominate RPG console.

See, people. These were the type of meltdowns I was looking for the DQX thread. Where have you been hiding?

I don't think you understand what the word "definitive" means. Your statements are contradicting one another.

I also don't think you understand what the word "majority" means.

What exactly did the Wii have in terms of JRPGs that displayed "JRPG dominance", "even before Dragon Quest X"?

I think you need to learn what those words mean before you criticize others.

The PS2 was the definitve console for Japanese RPGs last gen, but it didn't have all of them. Similarly, the DS is the definitive handheld (or platform, really) this gen for Japanese RPGs, though it doesn't have all of them (PSP has Crisis Core, at least).

You have to be in denial not to acknowledge that the Wii has been soaking up JRPG support, you can wave FF around all you want but it doesn't negate the rest of the industry (as Dragon Quest proves from within the confines of SE itself). I don't like to get into list wars but I will to prove my point. So here is a list of recently announced and upcoming Japanese RPGs to be released on all 3 platforms.

* = Recently released
** = Not officially confirmed, but has heavy evidence supporting it

Xbox 360

  • The Last Remnant*
  • Infinite Undiscovery*
  • Star Ocean 4
  • Cry On
  • Blue Dragon 2**
  • Magna Carta 2**
  • Final Fantasy XIII (outside of Japan)
  • Tales of Vesperia*

PS3

  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII
  • Bumpy Trot 2
  • Demon's Soul
  • The Last Remnant
  • Eternal Sonata*
  • Valkyria Chronicles*
  • White Knight Story
  • Disgaea 3*

Wii

  • Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World*
  • Chocobo's Dungeon*
  • Dokapon Kingdom*
  • Rune Factory Frontier
  • Little King's Story
  • Arc Rise Fantasia
  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade
  • The Golden Bonds (Ougon no Kizuna)
  • Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon
  • Tact of Magic
  • Dynamic Slash
  • Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time
  • Mothership Tales title (2009)
  • Sword of Legendia
  • Moon's Peak
  • Monster Hunter 3 (debatable)
  • Shining Force Gear**
  • Seiken Densetsu**
  • Sorcery Blade
  • Dragon Quest X

Now what I find most telling about this list is that the HD consoles are mostly being supported by the same 2-3 developers (SE, Namco, and a 3rd party working closely with a 1st party: Mistalker and From Software), the Wii on the other hand is getting JRPG support from a vast majority of developers in comparison, including the developers supporting the HD consoles.

That's what I call soaking up the JRPG support. Look at those lists again. In the past 6-8 months, only one new JRPG was announced to be in development for either HD console, and that was Demon's Souls for the PS3. That means that all those HD JRPGs have been known about and in development for ages. The rest of the RPG announcements went straight to the Wii. I can list like 6 of those games that we didn't know about back in March or April.

And Jump Festa 09 isn't even for another week.

So it seems completely absurd for me to see someone come in here and pretend like the Wii isn't snatching up Japanese RPGs when 90% of recently announced JRPG have been for the Wii. And that's not an exaggeration.

2 things wrong with this picture.

1. Your list is hardly an indication of the wii being the "definitive JRPG console".

2. You're putting words in my mouth.

I never denied or ignored the fact that the Wii has been getting JRPG support. I'm just arguing against your initial argument of "The Wii is THE definitive JRPG console".

When the PS2 was in it's prime against it's competition, it had the support of trademark franchises (DQ,FF,KH,etc) and the support of smaller devs. With that said, only a fool would compare the quality and quantity of JRPGs on the Wii to the PS2. What you call "soaking of JRPG support" is merely a bunch of small devs (with the exception of DQ10) jump on the success and momentum of the Wii (which may or may not last forever). Still, your main argument (which you apparently changed) was that the Wii is "The definite JRPG console". I'm not arguing against whether or not the Wii will/or will not be "the definitive JRPG console", but rather, the point that there are currently better choices out there for JRPGs.

Also, I'd like to add that support doesn't neccessarily come in small packages of niche games. Top teir franchises are what really defines the "support" of the genre, especially sub-genres like JRPGs. As of right now, it's pretty even.

So going back on my points that you've clearly avoided.

1. The Wii is NOT the "definitive JRPG console", as most of the "support" you threw in, are not currently on the system.

2. The Wii DO NOT have the "Majority" of JRPGs, nor does it have the best quality of JRPG.

You're arguing "will have" with "do have". It would be the same as me arguing that the PS3 is "The definitive racing console" because GT5 will eventually be released.

There's also the possibility that the games you've listed would not be very good in terms of quality. Would the perception of "definitive JRPG console" stay in tact if the support is no good sustance but heavy in numbers? It's all really to be taken with a grain of salt, but you're attempting to force the issue and pass it as fact.
