VIII isn't that bad if you don't mind the pace, or the old school play. And the story is actually one of the best, and lest apologetic, RPG stories I've ever played.
It doesn't try to pretend it's the best RPG ever, or that it's somehow transcended anything. It just is.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
