Do you mean downward thrust or stab? I thought their helmets protected them from downward thrusts (plus you needed to cast Jump to be able to jump high enough). I didn't think jump stabbing worked that well since they didn't get pushed back far enough and you slid into them recovering from the jump. Maybe I was just too close. Now I want to try this again. Is the D-pad on the Wiimote precise enough or should I get the classic controller? (Last time I played was with an emulator using a gamepad with a very sloppy D-pad).

The Wiimote D-pad is all you need. I play all my NES VC games with it and Mega Man 9 also. It also brings out the nostalgia because it's so much like a NES controller.
