I believe... that one of the reason that Halo became famous was partially on the account of Killzone 's fall-flat-on-face-hype.
Articles were raving about how it was going to beat Halo and a majority of the gaming community and those casuals outside it believed the words of this new killer franchise headed for PS2... so when judgement day came it turned out to be disaster. Horrendous game that was not even close of reaching those high expectations.
And considering how it had gained the rep as a halo-killer some people I can imagine thought: " fuck this game sucks... whats this Halo and why was it suppose to beast Halo? is that good?"
The fiasco that became Killzone somewhat elevated Halo along with KZ's own quality sacrifice. And that greatly added benefit to the Halo franchise.
In my opinion? Killzone won't be a Halo equvalent... it will be a different beast of its own.

Halo was already deeply entrenched as a major franchise by the time Killzone's "Halo-killer" hype started rolling around. If anything, that hype may have been what sunk KZ, since it did not live up to that promise as far as quality went. As far sales, I remember it made a minor appearance in the NPD charts for it's release month, never to be seen again. I'm surprised it sold as well as it did.
