I was a big fan of the original xbox and I thought that since Shenmue 2 was on the original xbox that there would be an announcement of Shenmue 3 on the 360. Since then, it seems that Sega has shifted their cinematic gaming over to the PS3 and I'm really hoping that if Kenshan! comes to America and does well and that if it is followed by Yakuza 3 and it also does well, then we'll finally get spiffy, awesome blu-ray / PS3 exclusive versions of Shenmue 3 and 4 (I read a long time ago that it was originally envisioned as a 4 part series) produced by Sega and developed by Yu Suzuki.
Another factor that influenced me to buy a 360 in March of '06 was that based on rumours that I had read in OXM, I was thinking that a Live version of World of Warcraft might be coming to the 360.
Lastly, it was the hype and the fact that they were hard to get during the first six months or so. Of course, it turned out that the ones from that time period were probably the ones folks shouldn't buy due to rlod. Mine is still running and still under warranty though.
