I know you got your problem solved, but it does bring up an interesting question...
When I got my PS3, I had issues getting my TV to recognize the HDMI as well. I first attempted to connect it to my 37" Olevia, and I swear nothing I did would work.
So I moved it over to my 65" Sony Bravia, and boom, first attempt it recognized the HDMI.
It makes me wonder if it is more of a TV thing than a console issue? Maybe the some TVs just don't want to recognize HDMI peripherals?
