The problem with the US market is that it's controlled by the cable/satellite companies. They will rape any profits you could hope to make. Tivo had the choice of bending over to Comcast or going bankrupt. The DVR makers are pretty much powerless and at the mercy of the content providers.
Even Microsoft failed with a good product, UltimateTV. There is just no money to be made in the DVR business and there are patent lawsuits a plenty. Tivo got sued by Gemstar and lost over a ridiculous patent.
