I hope they don't become like PCs, then the markets will merge and things will be the same. Already you can play many xbox 360 games on the PC, PS3 games too. If they become too similar why buy one console or the other, why buy a gaming PC for that matter (high end stuff). There will be little attraction of customers to your product.
The differences make not only one console succeed but many. Wii is doing outstanding but Xbox 360 and PS3 are doing good in their own right. If there are little differences than most likely one will succeed when there are many choices like three or more. PS2 just destroyed xbox and GC, it was embarrassing, the public chose one console and everyone else just followed. There is no reason to buy a 2nd console in that case but when there are differences than people get attracted to some aspect of one console and of another console, also gives a more higher chance to attract new people in the market.
