Dreamcast started the whole CPU+GPU combination. It also started the move towards online gaming with consoles, with built in modems. Microsoft followed in the Dreamcast's footsteps on how to build a console.
It did put out better graphics than the PS2, due to the use of a GPU. Sony was going to try and pull the same thing they did with the PS2, with the PS3, and not include a GPU, until they saw the 360s specs.
