Dark Cloud 2 would be my recommendation. I've seen it sell recently for $14.99 at EB Games and it's story is completely separate from DC1 (not to mention, much better).
Also, FFX-2 often gets a much tougher rep than it should. It was a great game, just not up to the standards of the series. But I would not recommend it if you hadn't played FFX. Of course, if that is the case, I'd recommend FFX over all other PS2 RPG's.
