Wanted to learn blues guitar, but I wasn't good. I then took up metal guitar and I was a better at that.

I don't play anymore though, it took me a long time to learn very little, I just wasn't good.

Yes, it takes a long time to learn very little... I tried to learn a song from super mario and it took me like 30 mins to figure out and play correctly 10 seconds of it. Only problem I have with guitar is learning to play songs... I like improvising and just messing around and trying new things.

If youre serious about guitar, or any instrument, it might be worth learning how to sightread music notation. Once you get that skill down solid while playing, you can play any song on the fly, just by reading the notes as you go along. Much easier than trying to memorize every note.

I am self thaught on accoustic I started learning at 26 which is 19 years ago.

I mostly play rythym and my right hand is not too bad for that although not great.

I am OK at backing people and for the most part will find there key altough some folks just cant sing full stop and then blame the musician.

I went to keyboard lessons about 7 years ago as my eldest daughter was learning it and I wanted to be able to help her.

I managed to get a associate Diploma after lots and lots of practice and hair pulling.

I have now turned to Piano and have managed to get Grade 4 and am now studying for grade 5.

I have included all this to respond to your sight reading comment.

As you can imagine all that studying was notation based playing and I still am not any good at sight reading per say.

OK simple pieces maybe but I would not be able to read and play performance pieces.

I was just wondering what kind of practice regime you would need to be able to do that.

I suppose having started so late in life learning the dots I done myself no favours as youth and confidence go hand in hand.

I still find myself learning the pieces from the music and them memorising them which I suppose may be a hang up from the guitar as my playing there is done by ear.

Having said all that I dont regret any of it and when I hit the post button will be going over to my piano for some practice.
