The DVD wars have been kind of dead for the last month or so...about 3 weeks ago sony actually raised the prices of its BD movies to an average of about $34 or $35, and HD-DVD followed them, actually putting its price a little lower, at about $32-$33. The thing of it is though, is that Sony's market share has been doing just fine; BD has about 70% of the market share according to dvdempire.com and HDDVD has about 30%, so 2.3333333 BD movies are sold for every HD-DVD movie, and this 70% of BD is actually better than what BD has done in the last couple of months so this price INCREASE hasn't done anything to hurt their sales, in fact if you look at the sales on eproductwars.com/dvd , you will see that for the last month, BD sales have stayed pretty constant. This is actually a lot more remarkable than all of this dry business stuff sounds. Previously, the HD-DVD was a little bit more expensive than the BD, yet the BD outsold about 2:1, now the HDDVD is a little bit cheaper yet the BD market share has improved, so things are really looking a LOT WORSE for HDDVD than BD right now.

So, this move seems to be one of desperation, one of microsoft paying off the studios, rather than the studios coming to this decision through deciding things over for themselves.
