It's not that they don't have new ideas.
It's that movies are well... like the console industry.
As movies went on they got more and more ridiculious expensive as technology and star power got more expensive to where they need to make sure the movies will make their money back... or it will cause them great finanical troules. DVD sales have mitigated this, but still to make sure the DVD sales make it back you've got to stick with something you know.
Hence everything seeming the same.
That's why all the "new" movies that are cult hits are the smaller budget stuff. The new smaller movies are a breath of fresh air... well at first, except they see a movie that was small that got big like Napoelon Dynamite or something... and then copy it 100 times over with cheap knockoffs trying to get back the glory and sales of the first game. (Kinda like the wii.) What they find is diminising returns however and are confused by it for some reason.
