Not at present; market penetration isn't high enough (there is some doubt as to whether it will become mainstream at all, certainly not soon) and prices can and will drop by a half if you wait a year or two.
HD isn't worth it unless you can tell the difference between the pictures. Find some way of getting your parents to compare the same picture in SD and HD on similar screens.
My advice: buy another DVD player, unless you need a PS3 for other reasons.
