The PS3 is an average BR player at best.

Component cables don't have a yellow cable, and you can't upsacale DVDs over a component connection as it's against the DVD forums T&Cs(unless you have XBMC on an Xbox1).

How good is your parents eyesight? You would be surprised how many people cant tell the difference between SD and HD because they can't see well enough.
