As you noticed sony seem to be clueless when it comes to writing software that effectivly uses their hardware or any hardware really.
The ps3eye can't even be used in singstar as a microphone yet it contains an array of 4 built in microphones ! It could do directional noise canceling in theory to provide better performance than a normal microphone and do voice control etc.
Also Toshiba have software for the cell which allows gesture control - usefull for say movie-video playback in appliances (no more searching for the lost remote ) - i dont think sony will ever provide this sort of feature - they could if they were smart though.
The best i have seen from any Ps3eye game is really the most primitive motion detection which is done using frame delta's - amusing but weak.
Same with the sixaxis motion support the OS (dashboard ?) provides zero support of direction tracking as do most games - a better smart OS would allow people to configure the controller including motion support to the players choices in any game as well and proving in game mouse support.
I am actually expecting Microsoft to bring out a Motion controller in their system soon and of course MS know software (unlike sony who are clueless) so I think MS may well do far better moton support than the sixaxis simply by virtue of better software support - they can build it into the OS and provide backward support for all previous games and leave sony or even the Wii in the dust.
It's a sad state of affairs for any PS3 owner - i can only recommend getting a Wii instead if you want innovative software - or wait for the rumoured X360 motion support which could blow the Wii's and Sony's motion support away.
And forget anything novel for the Ps3eye if they were gonna do something more interesting with it they would have by now so it shows they are incapable of innovation. !
