It's not pointless at all, if all they had was the Diamond award we would have very little idea how well games end up selling in the UK. Only 11 games have ever sold over 1 million, and 7 of those were in the last year.
This is far better than what we get from NPD in America, although obviously not as good as what we get from Famitsu in Japan. It's a compromise from them not being allowed to publicly release actual sales numbers.
