It's a spiriritual successor to the King's Field series, so it should be very open.
One of the complaints of King's Field was just HOW open the series was (and it's also why it gained quite a cult following). From what I hear, in one installment of the franchise you start the game mere feet from one of the hardest bosses to be found. You just have to avoid it and head elsewhere in the game.
