A lot of people seem to be ignoring one major issue.....game genre.

For some games like linear level progessive FPS games multiple discs is a a swap every few hours. RPGs it would not be.

I'm playing through FFXII some now, and I am constantly backtracking doing quests, jumping through multiple areas in minutes.

If this game was multi-disc I'd be needing to swap the disc every 1-3 minutes at points. Sure, doing the main story I guess I'd stick about in each area a good while, but when it comes to the smaller quests which do make up a large bulk of game, swapping discs constantly would be a real pain in the arse.

Didn't FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX have multiple discs and backtracking?

...and it was a real pain in the arse, to the point I didn't bother buying 2 of those 3.   Also I found that they were limited on some smaller quest options/expanses.

You had to switch discs?  I admit I didn't bother with VIII or IX but I don't remember ever having to switch discs with VIII (though that was many years ago).
