Prices on HDTV's and bluray players are down alot this year so this issue is slowly fixing itself. You also hit the nail on the head with compressed files which can often deteriorate quality. The biggest difference with blu-ray is the sound quality. It is amazing the difference in sound, moreso than the difference in picture.
