BTW, gimping early adopters is not unprecedented. For one thing, the first runs of the PS2 could only read single layer discs, which is why so many developers were reluctant to use the second layer. That also means that you would have to get a newer PS2 to play games like God of War and Xenosaga.

By the time GoW came out, I think *MOST* lauch ps2's had been weeded out. That "Disc Read Error" was freakin' horrible. This is not anecedotal evidence, for three years, I worked in a store that purchased used consoles, I can't tell you HOW MANY ps2's we had to refuse because they couldn't read the blue discs and/or dvds. Eventually, we just automatically began turning down certain s# ranges without even bothering to test them. "Yeah, this is a launch unit, its crap - we're not even going to look at it."

I know that *SOME* people got a lot of use out of their launch units, just like *SOME* people still have launch 360's, but I'd assume that *SOME* people got a lot of miles out of their Chevelles and Gremlins too.

yeap same thing with me.... I could aven say that I have never seen a console broke that much.... I use to have a lot of customers and friends who bought more than 5 PS2 total at least... so early built being bad is not new... and it won't get better with new tech what ever is the brand... lok at apple and Ipod the issues they had a couple years ago....

high tech is always tricky this gen it's MS who fucked it up big time..... (and maybe the 2 other may show their weaknes later, I hope not for their owners though)....  all those new gen are between 1 and 2 years old... it's a long way to go before they end/die we'll probably see a couple changes by then....
