Generally speaking, no. To understand why, you need to know how interlaced and progressive resolutions work. With an interlaced picture, half of the scanlines are rendered each cycle, with the other half rendered the next cycle, and so on. With a progressive picture, all of the scanlines are rendered at once. So, do the math:

 1080i: 540 scanlines/cycle

720p: 720 scanlines/cycle

So, as you can see, a 720p display will have more scanlines rendered at any given moment than a 1080i display. The 1080i display will technically be higher-resolution, but you'll see all of the problems associated with an interlaced display as well.

So, try your TV on 720p. I guarantee you'll see a positive difference where HD content is concerned.

From what I heard 1080i is better for movies and 720p is better for games, any truth to this?

Off topic: Are you THE Garcian Smith? If so, you were great in that game ;)

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!
