I picked up a banned modded xbox 360

Get the NXE off of the 'bay and pop it on a USB stick and update your 360 from there. The system link idea is a good one. If you own the game then I see no harm in backing it up, and as it's already modded it should be able to dump a disc image for you if you hook it uo to your PC.
