Well, look at Intel. Between 2001 and 2006 their CPUs were in an even worse position compared to AMD than AMD is to Intel now. Pentium 4 was hot and expensive to produce as well as slow. However, their sales far exceeded AMD due to partly greater fab capacity but mainly the exclusitivity deals with OEMs like Dell. Good marketing helped too (Intel Inside branding was excellent). It is therefore possible to own 80%+ of the marjet while having significantly inferior CPUs.
