Yeah, I think they fixed a few things with the 3 patches, though for the most part I never use Merchants anyway 
However, the new expansion pack (on my other computer) is pretty decent, especially the Americas campaign, however, as I find it quite a taxing game, I'm hoping Empire will be easier to play!
