I'm sorry, but the worm was awesome. I think it's really important in a game to change the pace here and there. One thing that kind of burned me out on the first Gears was that they didn't change things up enough. I've started it on both PC and 360 and haven't finished it on either platform. (I plan on finally finishing it after I'm done with Gears 2)
For me, the changes in pace are a key ingredient in keeping me interested in the game. If it's just shooting shooting shooting, I get bored and I feel like I'm just grinding my way to the end. I need at least a cut scene here and there.
All that being said, I love how in both Gears games, you are CONSTANTLY on edge. You never know if there's a wretch or an ammo box around the next corner. The only criticism I have about the game (and this happens in just about every shooter these days) is that I'm sick of being promised chopper pickups. They almost never happen (the chopper crashes, the area is too hot to land in, etc.) and they are starting to seem like a cheap way to move you into the next stage of the game. It's like that bad dream where you're running in place and not getting anywhere. It's like that episode of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends when they keep trying to leave for the airport but Mr. Hariman keeps changing the itinerary so they can't leave.
