Congrats on buying a 360. Yes there is always a risk (0% risk doesn't exists with mass-produced goodz).
Got the problem a year ago and they fixed it in a week (I was also able to follow my console via XBOX.com), no issue since then.
Mine had a motherboard problem at that time...
Anyhow, It didn't impacted my satisfaction for the console. 
Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.
