I had a 2006 unit which I ended up giving to my father and bought a 60GB this summer. I never had any hardware issues with my first box, but I will say that the 60GB is a lot quieter. The drive is near silent compared to the old unit.
As far as the red rings goes, you can check out threads about the reliability of the new units at places like GAF. So far, it seems the hardware revision in the 60GBs has significantly lowered failure rates.
