Are Turkey actually part of the EU, yet? I heard they're having trouble getting in because member states are worried about an Islamic nation holding too much power (Turkey's population = 120 million. Seats in the European Parliament are handed out depending on the size of your population). |
The EU is, in my opinion, more apprehensive about the Turkish military's role in the political system. The military has an inordinate amount of power in Turkish politics compared to the militaries of other liberal democracies. They have perpetrated a few coups in the past and threatened others with the potential of a coup. There is currently an investigation into an alleged coup that was to be perpetrated by the clandestine "Ergenekon" organization against Prime Minister Erdogan's government. This will be a most interesting case to follow.
