Apparently yes; it was some sort of super-duper double secret probation demo only visible/available to select users.

I thought it was an open demo. And on XBL, open to "gold members" last week.

It was the same for 360 and PC, those that pre-ordered got early access...had nothing to do with gold memberships, though I'm guessing you need one...?

Anyway, it is Valve's way of rewarding faithful customers, if you pre-order you get $5 off and early access to the demo.  If you're unsure about a Valve product (for shame!) then just ignore the fact that others played it last week, because the demo is available to everyone now.

I don't even use XBL anymore; the last time I logged on to update my stats was months ago. The only exclusive 360 title published in 2008 I've bought this year other than Gears 2 was Ninja Gaiden 2, so the 360 has pretty much become my redheaded stepchild of consoles.

I've been enjoying the L4D Steam demo since Thursday, which is why I ordered it. I still swear I played the demo BEFORE I paid for the pre-order. I've been buying a lot of titles through Steam lately, but doubt that has anything to do with it.

Ran some FRAPS tests and was interested to see that the frame rate averaged at a very consistent 60fps whereas HL2 Lost Coast averages over 190fps on my rig. Anyone else seeing this?
